Videolan Demonstrates Innovative Desktop Video Networking Applications At Telecon Xvi
VL2000 Desktop Video Network Goes Enterprise Wide -- Adds Live Program Distribution and Video Archive Research/Distribution Capabilities
TELECON XVI, ANAHEIM, Calif., Oct. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Two major new desktop video networking capabilities -- live and stored video program distribution and video archive research and real-time retrieval -- are being demonstrated by VideoLan Technologies Inc , in Booth #1744 (Hall B) at the TeleCon XVI tradeshow being held in Anaheim, Califonia, from October 29-31. Both capabilities are enabled on VideoLan's VL2000 Desktop Video Conferencing Network.
"The integration of video conferencing, video distribution and video archiving on a common network platform defines a massive advance in video telecommunications," said Peter Beck, corporate vice president of strategic market development at VideoLan. "Video conferencing is an established application and distribution and archiving are emerging as significant new markets. The strength of VideoLan's VL2000 network is its ability to serve as a common delivery platform for all three applications, which together are far more useful and valuable than video conferencing alone."
Video Distribution
Live video distribution is exemplified by demonstrations of the VL2000 at NBC Desktop Video's showcase in New York City. The network is used to demonstrate how up-to-the minute financial and business reporting can be brought to the desktop. Similar live and stored video distribution applications are emerging in internal corporate communications (for example, to distribute training videos), distance learning, and telemedicine. Broadcasters and producers could use video distribution to distribute general interest video.
Video Archiving
The VL2000 Video Network is one of the first integrated distribution systems and archives to offer the video storage, indexing, and research functions -- as well as the full motion, broadcast quality video distribution -- mandatory for establishing a video archiving and distribution market. With a VL2000-supported video archive, users can easily navigate an index to find footage: indexing is a critical capability, because video footage does not follow the name file structures as conventional text or other files. Once the desired footage is found, users can preview selections, make a final decision, and retrieve the footage to the desktop. It is expected that video archiving and distribution will be used extensively by corporations as well as by owners of historic or general-interest footage.
VideoLan's VL2000 Desktop Video Conferencing Network delivers broadcast- quality, full-motion video to the desktop PC over existing twisted-pair copper wire in the Local Area Network (LAN) and some Wide Area Network (WAN) environments. Because VideoLan's patented Metallic Fiber(TM) transmission and broadband switching technologies enable the VL2000 to operate independently of the LAN, there is no risk of interference or congestion on the corporate data network.
