Smalltalk has never been more than a niche language, handy for certain custom development projects where its advantages in time to market, rapid prototyping, etc. came in handy. In this it resembles Lisp.

Java is enough like Smalltalk, Lisp, et. al. to have some of their advantages. It also appears to be the next lingua franca, as C++ has been recently.

ParcPlace will have a good market for current products using Smalltalk for some time; the core business will not be "eliminated." The bull case is that an opportunistic ParcPlace management could target a much larger market for general programming and database tools using the skills developed for Smalltalk; the translation is relatively simple and ParcPlace has an abundance of talent in this type of language not available in most competing companies.
