Globalstar is best by far [for voice]. It is 48 satellites, vs 55 for Iridium. Globalstar starts flying in 1998. Iridium supposed to start 1997/98 but they haven't got financing arranged yet. Globalstar has all money ready to go apart from 10% about. Iridium is complex and expensive. Globalstar wholesale calls at 40c per minute is miles less than Iridium who think in terms of dollars per minute. Globalstar being CDMA is better than Iridium which is TDMA. I wouldn't be surprised if Iridium is cancelled through lack of interest. Globalstar has spectrum allocated and development work is all on target. Target markets for Globalstar are high value mobile calls in developed countries and phoneless towns in developing, where low cost "remote phone box" service can be cheaply provided. Other satellite systems are either too small to worry about or data oriented, such as Teledesic. Globalstar and Iridium are the two major voice systems. Inmarsat is also having a go. Maurice Winn
