Your points are well taken. I'm not an expert on the local customs of the Catholic Church in Africa, but it would surprise me if there was flexibility on this matter. Don't shoot me if I'm wrong, though.

It did seem to me that Clinton had motives other than graciously accepting the invitation of his hosts (pardon the pun) to partake in Communion. The article mentions that the point had been worked out beforehand, which leads me to believe that there was at least some political or publicity angle at work.

I wouldn't go so far as to say what he did was dishonorable or insulting. But ask any adult convert to Catholicism what he or she had to do in preparation for taking Communion the first time. You can't just ask the local bishop if it's OK.

His spinmeisters didn't have to respond to Cardinal O'Connor's statement by questioning his doctrinal knowledge of the matter. A simple statement that he was led to believe it was OK and is sorry if it offended anyone would have sufficed. Why do they always have to tear down Clinton's critics to boost him?

It will be a long time before we will have Christian unity, I'm afraid. All sides have to peel away layers of misunderstanding, ignorance and prejudice before that can happen. As an example, a well educated person my wife used to work with didn't even know Catholics are Christian. My Grandmother called me to the carpet once when I was in college because the brass group I played with performed at a Lutheran church on Reformation Sunday. By opening the dialogue, maybe the President unwittingly got the ball rolling in the right direction.
