Wayne J,

My understanding is that the age at which you can legally trade securities varies from state to state. Usually it's either 18 or 21. I have accounts with 3 online brokers and none have told me I needed a custodian even though I opened the first two when I was 19 and the other after I turned 20. All did ask for date of birth, so they do know my age. I live in Indiana, and as I said, I think it varies from state to state.
