Meathead -
Compaq et. al. have been trying to impede Dells progress for
years.

Although some field people at CPQ have had Dell as a target, it was not a priority at the senior staff level until long after Ross Cooley left. Ross never thought Dell was much of a threat. Did you know that CPQ considered buying Dell in 1992? Ross was one of the ones who shot down the effort, he thought it would be a waste of money (guess that's one decision that he might want to reconsider).
Dell did not receive action at the corporate strategy level until 3Q97, although there was discussion earlier in the year.
Don't know who you know at CPQ but you can have them check a few facts on when Dell made it onto the radar screen at CST - it is pretty much certain that if it was not presented to senior staff then it was not taken seriously at CPQ.
Dell has a lot of advantages and is very nimble but if CPQ, IBM and HP start to pay serious attention it will surely hurt dell. Don't confuse field 'rah-rah' programs with real corporate strategy.
