VBH, I have had orders filled after hours. They were day order trades that I placed while the market was open but were not filled until after the close of the market.

I always wondered myself about after hour trades, until I had some filled for me. I would guess that a good portion of the after hour trades are orders that people put in to buy lower than the current ask or to sell at a higher price than the current bid. After the market closes the MM's may decide to fill these orders that they ignored when the market was open.
