It's all about the timing. Investing companies and all of us know that at some time, these markets will take off. For example, I've been waiting for digital video to take off since 1996. Will it be this year, next or later? Will it be a gradual growth that sneaks up on us or will a particular event trigger the growth? Don't know. Cisco is talking up the integration of voice into data networks. This has been a holy grail for 10 years! Think of it, we've got 2 networks - PBX and LAN - why not run both on our LAN! Hasn't made sense or been practically or technologically desirable until now or soon. These types of fundamental changes take time and usually take years for all the necessary pieces to be put into place. The buildout of IP and broadband networks has been going on for a little while and has been accelerating. When the equipment and software can take advantage of the bandwidth and the services are rolling out, there will be a boom in productivity much more pronounced than the PC effect has had. Real-time collaborative design, video-conferencing, on-line training - voice and data costs will tumble. The question is - when will this really begin for most of us? Are the cable and phone companies really investing in upgrading their networks or will we continue in the test phase for a while? Certainly encouraging that cable modems have reached a standard but I don't believe XDSL has. We've been hearing about set-top boxes for a couple years - is this the year? Gigabit ethernet - will it begin deployment this year or will Fast Ethernet continue to grow strongly?

Many questions and many companies investing in solutions.
