You're almost spot on with the history (though it's Sybase not Skybase).

I wouldn't be as lenient on Covey as you are though. You mustn't forget that it was Covey that brought in Larry Ford - not exactly a brilliant decision <g> - and most of the problems of the last 2-3 years can be traced back to Ford.

In particular the huge R&D spend of 96/97 (200 mil is about right) was a direct consequence of some *really* bad technical decisions that Ford took (or at least signed off).

Covey's problem as I see it were:
a) BPCS was his baby and he couldn't let it go
b) he's technically adequate but not a visionary (and again he couldn't let go)
c) he has AS/400 blood in his veins, and never really believed in the Unix product (which is where a large chunk of the R&D investment went)
d) he was prepared to promise potential customers anything to get a sale

Having said all that, I wish him well too. I do truly believe that ssax is better off without him.
