Richie -
depends a lot on your modem, and what sw you are connecting with. Under NT you can monitor about anything you want, frame transfer rate, bytes sent/received/total, etc. Win95 has a lot less, but you can watch transfer rates and get an idea. Most modems today adjust the connect rate on the fly to adjust for noise etc. so the initial connect rate may not have much to do with the actual rate at any given time. there are a number of good packages from third parties, much of it free, but it depends on your modem hw, try the site of your modem vendor for starters.
