Another factor can be the retailers are overstocked on the entry level models which are not moving, while the higher CPU models are moving out.

This would fit with Intel's shortage of higher Mhz CPUs and no mention of shortages of lower priced Pentiums.

That along with the direct channels and the fact that the US represents less than half of Intel's sales can add up to the discrepancy.

Also, Dataquest reported that the PC industry was up over 20% (less Apple) in the 3Q. If CompUSA did so poorly maybe other retailers did better. They are not the whole industry by far.
