RCN Expands Its Advanced Fiber Optic Network, Begins Construction In Two New Boston-Area Suburbs

PRINCETON, N.J., April 8 /PRNewswire/ -- With construction of its advanced fiber optic network in Somerville, MA rapidly nearing completion, RCN Corporation (Nasdaq: RCNC) announced today it was continuing work in the neighboring towns of Arlington and Newton, and had expanded its Boston-area licensing and construction effort to include the communities of Brookline and Wakefield.

"We continue to intensify RCN's construction effort, both by adding new markets and expanding our operations in existing markets," said David C. McCourt, RCN's Chairman and CEO. "In ever-increasing numbers, Boston-area residents are demanding local phone and cable competition. RCN is happy to be providing these hardworking men and women the power of choice."

Mike Adams, President of RCN's Technology and Network Development Group, said the company's momentum is increasing in the Boston area, particularly as it enters new suburban communities.

"Even within this market, we're benefiting from experience," Adams said. "We began construction in Arlington in early 1998, about three months after we started Somerville. As a result of increases in efficiency and additional work crews, we expect to complete our work in both communities at the same time."

Adams said RCN would activate its first Arlington customers later this month. The company has been activating approximately 2,500 homes in Somerville each week.

Separately, RCN announced that it has completed construction of Charles River Park, Boston's largest residential apartment complex, with 1,850 units in seven buildings located in downtown Boston.

"Charles River Park is a marquis development in the center of the city," McCourt said. "We have just completed construction of the property, and we are already seeing 60% penetration rates in some of these buildings."
