Given that VLSI has been painting a worse and then worse again
picture, plus MOT's surprise warning about future quarters, plus
the following has me leaning towards thinking that VLSI will miss
this quarter:

vlsi-3/3/98 Tom Kurlack news
biz.yahoo.com
VLSI Technology's (VLSI - news) first quarter earnings were expected to fall 28 percent compared with the fourth quarter.

VLSI's earnings per share will fall to about $0.10 in the first quarter from a previous estimate of $0.30. Estimated earnings for the year as a whole have been slashed by half to $0.72 per share, Kurlak said.

current consensus is 0.14.

Agreed, if earnings are to be 0.18-.22 the stock would move
higher.., but those numbers are above the company's guidance.

On the other hand, VLSI can surprise on the upside. But when
I've seen that there's been a reason: ie: STB w/DirecTV, plant
closures..., to say that VLSI will surprise on the upside is to say
that the trend has changed from downward earnings pressure to
upward pressure.

I'm on the fence, leaning towards expecting a miss (60% sure).
IF I hold a position thru earnings release I'd rather be short. What
reason is there to expect an upside surprise?

PS. currently have no position.., just covered my last short.
