As to whether the Alpha is a threat to Merced and SGI, it seems like despite all the hype it should not be any threat on a performance basis. My experience (and that of some other people around my department) with Alpha-based linux boxes has been rather disappointing. However, notice that we did buy a few of them instead of something else like SGIs, thinking "wow, that's a lot of bang for the buck." So that large mhz number does sell boxes, even if they are a disappointment later on.
