It is my impression that most of the bottleneck in computer work is in the human interface, ie display, area. A study had been done that indicated that 90% of the time was spent in 10% of the code, and that 10% was the display. That problem was originally approached with the MMX technology. Well, wouldn't you know it, but as soon as the 2D display gets resolved, somebody said "Wouldn't it be neat to have 3D?"! Remember that there were some pretty clever programming stunts used to recapture that cpu time, none the least of which was not to support a 1200 x 1600 display. (768 x 1024 is more normal which reduces the cpu demand considerably! I used the 1200 x 1600 to 'eat the time' for the example.)
Well, CHROME is designed to increase the display process. I understand CHROME is a display card that plugs into an available PCI slot, but in order for the card to get 'loaded' it requires the higher speed cpu.
It is interesting to note, that the speech recognition software that I use requires a cpu speed of 166, so right there I am at the 'bottom' rung! I haven't checked yet whether I can upgrade this to a faster cpu. Maybe I can get one of the new PC100 cards! I don't know what I am going to do yet.
As for edge, that doesn't really have an effect in this case. However, any 'raw speed' increase will be useful! I am looking forward to the 400's, or even better the 1G's! (In the future)
