MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 8, 1998--NEC Computer Systems Division (NEC CSD) of Packard Bell NEC Inc. (PBNEC) today named Mr. Steve Lair to the position of senior vice president of sales, service and marketing, effective immediately.

Lair comes to NEC CSD from Lair Consulting Group, where he was president and CEO, and brings with him thirty years of experience in the personal computer industry. In his new position, Lair will be responsible for sales, and customer service and support for all multinational and domestic accounts. Lair will report to Luis Machuca, executive vice president of Packard Bell NEC's commercial division (NEC CSD).

The combination of NEC Computer Systems, with its recognition as an advanced technology pioneer and breadth of award-winning products coupled with Lair, who is recognized in the industry as a savvy marketeer and sales strategist, positions the company well to move forward on its strategy to match technology with customer needs.

"Steve possesses an incredible amount of sales, marketing and management experience in the PC world. His broad range of expertise will make our sales and customer service programs more comprehensive and beneficial to our customers globally," said Machuca. "Steve's focus will be to set a strategic path for delivering our technologically advanced products to the extended enterprise and opening doors for worldwide opportunities."

"This company's core competencies are stronger and deeper than any other company I've ever seen," said Lair. "My experience at other companies has prepared me well to leverage NEC CSD's capabilities in the commercial market."

Prior to the formation of the Lair Group, Lair was the vice president of personal productivity products at Texas Instruments (TI) and was key in 258 percent growth in notebook computer sales over a fourteen-month period beginning in May of 1995. TI's market share also grew from eleventh to fourth during this timeframe. Before joining TI Inc., Lair was vice president of marketing for Toshiba America, which rose to the number one market share position in the mobile computing marketplace during his tenure.

Prior to Toshiba, Lair was vice president and director of Dataquest's MicroComputer Systems Group, and directed Dataquest's worldwide personal computer and software research and consulting practice. Before this, Lair spent fifteen years at Hewlett-Packard and held a number of marketing and field operations positions.

Lair earned a Bachelor of Science in Engineering and an MBA in international marketing from California State University at Northridge.
