Don't you think most people want there to be something out there that is more than we are? The things we have relied on are failing us-- Religions have taken a beating, mythologies have become outdated, science has outdistanced even our imaginations at times, but often just leads to greater problems. And so we try to find other mysteries in which to believe, some other place to plant our hopes.

I just finished reading Ishmael by Daniel Quinn. He attempts to change the way man looks at himself and his relation to the Earth.
I don't know that I agree with all he said, but one thing did make sense to me. Why should we see man as some sort of culmination of evolution? Why shouldn't we be changing and growing into a new form? But we don't see ourselves evolving into something better and different; we seem to think we are what the gods intended as the ultimate creation. We always look for something outside of ourselves to solve our problems: gods, extra-terrestrials, science. It would be nice to look for and find strength and answers from our spirits.
