There are supposed to be photographs in The Dalles (Oregon, on the Columbia River - let's say, as a matter of fact, "The Mighty Columbia") ~ photos of a sturgeon they dragged out of the river what was 30 feet long. I've seen, if I rem right, photos of one officially measured at 27 feet. They're whitish and just generally sort of ugly. Norton himself, as a boy in The Dalles, saw a monster dragged out he guessed was 20 feet or more, but this is, of course, as seen through Norton's eyes.
I see all those 10000 sailboarders at Hood River, from up on the hill, whizzing back and forth, and they look like little casting flies, and I wonder if they know what's under there.
Course, I think these things only eat drowned stuff they find on the bottom.
BTW, the Columbia is the country's largest river, because it empties the most water to the ocean of any, and I have been told that's what rivers are for, and this is the way Oregonians think. |
