Sorry Michael, it's inevitable. You WILL be assimilated. :)
No, look, really, if your are going to pick a fight, pick fight you can win.
Sun needs to be redoubling their efforts on the server, before they get blindsided like Novell. Sun does not have chance in hell of toppling the Win32 client hegemony. And as sad as that sounds, there are very good reasons why corporations are going to buy Wintel PCs.
1. The cost has come way down, getting close to the price point that Ellison was touting for the NC.
2. In a world of increasing worker mobility, many of them need full functioning laptops. In fact many corporations are just buying laptops instead of PC for the workers. My understanding of NC is that is not a stand alone computer, and requires a net connection to work.
3. MS is a reactive company, they react to market conditions. When corporations wanted IP addressing, they add it. If the market wants web browsing, they put it in. If the corporations are concerned about TCO, they will fix the design flaws in Windows, which is exactly what they are doing in Win98 and NT5.
4. Despite it's problems, Wintel is becoming defacto standard. Many companies are standardizing on MS Office and desktop and for small companies, back office on the server. |
