their main objections to buying online. A recent deal announced by Wave Systems which offers a new method of online payment
may now entice these users to buy online.

Wave systems has announced an agreement with IBM to incorporate wave Systens' WaveMeter chip into IBM computers. The
patented chip, which works very like a credit card, is a cryptographic engine and electronic content metering system integrated in a
single chip which holds consumers' account balances, transaction logs and software execution licenses.

Wave Systems claims the chip is a more secure method of online payment than SET, the secure electronic transactions protocol
and also claims it will change the way people purchase online, offering users the opportunity to rent, pay-per-use or rent to own.
The two companies are looking at ways to make this the industry standard.

With E-Commerce expected to increase from USD2.6 billion in 1996 to more than USD220 billion in 2001, predictions based on the
assumption that online security will improve, the metering chip may be the catalyst for the predicted boom.
