Jfred,
Chows are born to fight and bite. One canine expert advises that if you really don't like someone, give them a Chow. Chows are serious biters and can and do do serious damage.
German Shepherds, well, another overpopular breed that can be unpredictable and are dead serious when they bite.
Another interesting breed is the Bouvier des Flandres, sometimes used in police work, along with the other Belgian breeds, but not too much anymore. It seems as how the courts in the US of A have ruled that police dogs must be a German Shepherds and any other breed is deceptive in that role.
About 15 years ago, the City of Montclair (the one down your way) used a Bouvier des Flandres, a very large and shaggy breed, as their police dog. They would put ribbons in the dog's ears and take him out on patrol. The general response from the streets was, "Aw, that big Poodle ain't gonna bite anything." Surprise! That big "Poodle" bit, and bit good and hard and deep! Well, partly for the reasons stated above, the Bouvier des Flanders was soon retired in favor of German Shepherds, the industry standard.
Personally, I rather like the Bouvier des Flandres. They are truly all-purpose dogs and generally make excellent family pets.
My most dreaded breed is the pitbull (Staffordshire Terrier), for a number of reasons. In fact, I hesitate to classify them as dogs. Exotic animals comes to mind, however.
