Saf T Lok Chairman Joins in Press Conference on Stronger Gun Safety Lock Legislation
TEQUESTA, Fla.--April 9, 1998--Saf T Lok (NASDAQ: LOCK - news) Chairman and inventor Frank Brooks joined New York City Councilman Noach Dear for a press conference on the front steps of City Hall in Manhattan this morning to discuss legislation that will for the first time address the issue of integrated gun locks and the retrofit market.
Councilman Dear is pushing for ''common sense'' legislation that will, if passed, require that New York City gun owners install an integrated gun lock, not merely a trigger lock, in order to qualify for a New York City gun permit. The measure would apply to all newly purchased handguns as well as to the renewal of all existing gun licenses. With gun licenses being required for renewal every two years in New York City, the legislation could lead to the usage of safety locks on all registered handguns in the city within two years.
Chairman Brooks was asked to attend to lend expertise in the area of integrated gunlocks. Brooks, a grandfather and gun collector, invented a lock currently being built by Saf T Lok , to keep his grandchildren safe from his firearms. The Saf T Lok, a mechanical combination, touch-release gun lock device effectively precludes the unauthorized use of a handgun, yet allows the owner access to his loaded weapon in a few seconds - even in the dark.
The recently patented Saf T Lok is now in full scale production for both the ''grip lock'' and the new ''magazine lock'' versions, each of which offer gun owners the opportunity of providing home protection without risk to their families. The company is currently focused on accelerating production on the new magazine lock to meet the demands of current and expected orders.
Saf T Lok has been endorsed by the Fraternal Order of Police, the Associated Locksmiths of America, the Safe and Vault Technicians Association and has received strong interest and support from law enforcement officers across the country.
The device has also been tested exhaustively. The ''grip lock'' was unlocked and locked through 36,525 cycles, representing once a day for 100 years, without any significant evidence of wear. Firing tests were also competed with a weapon affixed with a Saf T Lok ''grip lock'' being fired 5,000 times without failure to the lock.
