ANd I bet you thought of a lot of great zingers during that time--those"WHY didn't I think of that!" CW has no such scruples about manners. He's heard me complain so much that he has taken to screening calls at the dinner hour (This may sound sweet and helpful but it's mostly so I don't stop cooking his dinner even for a moment) He says,"Are you selling anything??" in a real nasty tone of voice if they ask for Mr or Mrs. Westbrook. If they say no, he says, "Well, what do you want?" Then he says, "Well, that sounds like selling to me and we don't want any." He's very proud of this smooth technique and I haven't the heart to criticize him. Except the other night he got to, "What do you want?" Pause. "I think you have the wrong number." "What?" "No -you have the wrong number!" and he hung up. Then he said, really put out, "I can't believe they have people calling who can't even speak English." I looked at him puzzled-and then thought, "Oh sh*t. I bet that was the gardener I've been trying to hire for a month." So I called him real fast---and guess what--it was.
