These Killer Apps are all around - perhaps you circulate in a low tech environment.
AutoCAD Rel 14 (Seen any draftsmen using a drawing board lately?), Solid Works, Client Access to SAP and BAAN Servers, Adobe PhotoSHOP, Gene and DNA splicing/simulation, molecular biology and fundamental physics studies, Health Care and HMO patient information data bases - drug interactions and predictive therapy - Media development (LucasFilms uses Intel Workstations and Studio 3D MAX EXCLUSIVELY), Special Effects for the entertainment industry (SKG Dreamworks and every major and minor Hollywood studio is working in the digital domain, the convergence of PCs and Digital TVs (not tomorrow but within a year or two), the WEB, The WEB, the WEB.
How do you think WEB Graphics are generated? On a MediaGX?
What PCs/Workstations do you think Web Page Developers and WEB Masters use? K6-166 PCs? HA! The need SPEED!
And the biggest MHz Sink of ALL - JAVA! Java needs every ounce of CPU horsepower and it will only demand more - and the rate of Java development has barely BEGUN!
Many people "surf the web" but there are a ton of DEVELOPERS that are CREATING THE WEB!
And what servers will be squirting WEB CONTENT down to the 1 Billion little "surfers"? INTEL based servers!
Your tunnel vision about limited PC requirements shows what limited imagination you really have.
Listen to a replay of the last 3 major speeches given by Alan Greenspan. He goes to GREAT LENGTH to pin point advanced computer technology as the PRIMARY ENGINE for increased productivity during the major economic expansion of the 1980s and 1990s. He almost single handedly attributes this improved productivity - due to adoption of newer and newer technology - as the cause for economic growth with near zero inflation.
This all started in 1982 and continues through today. And guess what product was introduced in late 1981 - the IBM PC.
Kind of a coincidence, wouldn't you say?
Perhaps that is why - the lack of seeing the real technical content within our basic environment - you have such a dim view of the future and its reliance on continual improvement.
Limit your vision and you become very limited.
