Gary L, (I am actually a Gary as well BTW)

Many thanks for your thoughtful post.

<<I like Maybank. Do you see much downside? >>

Maybank is one of the flagship banks that Bernie alluded to earlier, and, no, I really do not see much downside in the long term. I feel its just a question of picking the right place to jump on. I am sorry to hear of your losses. I was very fortunate to have arrived here just a few months before the "proverbial" hit the fan and so was not heavily invested. I am long term confident in the region because there are just too many extremely hard working and highly resolved people here. I realize what that sounds like but I assure you it is not intended as gratuitous. It is the most valuable asset here IMO.

re: Mahatir; I think the "good" Dr. has done a major disservice to his country. Frankly speaking I see him ( and his minions) as the single biggest hurdle in reattracting foreign investment. But then I also see him as one of the single biggest influences on the previous growth in the region. A dichotomy to be sure. He has done incredibly right things in the past but for now...he is an impediment. You may want to try the following link and then click on the Malaysia report to read a shared opinion:

re: The fact and fancy list. I suspect as a transplant, having now lived in the U.S. for 30 years, you may understand why Bernie and I play the old game of "ain't it awful". Please don't mind us for letting off steam. Everyone is a critic. <G> The fact is that there is much to be excited for in this region.

P.S. Ever miss laksa or nasi lemak? I know I would.

Best,
Stitch
