Thanks Gary -- for the Internet link. It is a good assessment of Malaysia's outlook, though I question whether Thailand and Indonesia would be rewarded any better by fund managers when the economy revives again in SE Asia. Indonesia does not really produce much goods and services for the rest of the world. Thailand does somewhat -- but it is low tech and its goods compete with low cost items from China. The Malaysian workforce is really more educated and resourceful - more natural resources, more high tech. The Malaysian system really works -- transportation, telecommunications, legal & civil order, business, political stability, good housing, electricity, civic responsibility, education, medical services, etc. The standards of all these systems are among the best in the world! This is no third world! Life is good there. I know you're convinced - but I write this for less informed readers. Malaysia will come out well ahead of the other SE Asian countries. How Malaysia gets such a bum rap is beyond me. Now that it has happened, I had actually hoped for an IMF involvement so that crony and bumiputra preferences would be toned down somewhat to level the playing field. Gosh! -- do I miss Petaling Street laksa, Nasi Lemak, Hokkien mee, Ampang Yong Tao Foo, etc. You guys have it make! Fortunately for me, Seattle has most of the good eats too. |
