Nothing like a great fish story to have in the old memory bank.

I got one for ya but it's got nothing to do with fish, just water.

Takes place in this very small north island town we lived in.

One beautiful mid day I decided to take a walk down the local government dock and watch people launching there boats and heading out to either fish or whatever. Being a small town I knew almost everyone living there.
One friend I spotted (Derrick) was waiting in line to launch his 20 footer.
Normal procedure when launching there, was for someone to be in the boat and your partner would back the trailer onto the water. If you back in far enough the boat floats off the trailer. Sounds pretty easy ay? Not so.
Because of a low tide, it was necessary to back his station wagon far enough into the water that his back wheels went under water.
But still they weren't able to back in far enough for the boat to float off the trailer.
Derrick's suggestion to his partner was to pull the trailer back up the ramp and take a run at it. Then just at the right moment slam on the brakes and if all works well and with enough momentum the boat should slide off.
Only there was one slight problem that was overlooked.
When time came to slam the brakes there were no brakes. The wheels on there first attempt got the brake pads wet. The car, the boat and the trailer kept going. Needless to say the boat finally floated off but so did the wagon. The car floated further and further out into the bay.
Being a sharp thinker, the guy driving the car decided to climb out onto the roof of the car. Derrick floated over in his boat to rescue his buddy so no one got hurt.
Everyone on the dock watched in disbelief. Finally his car was overcome by water and sank to the bottom of the ocean. With trailer jack knifed under the car.
Derrick docked his boat and hitched a ride to our only gas station. In a state of panic he insisted to our only local mechanic that he get in his tow truck and come rescue his car.
Unfortunatly Derrick picked the worst time to sink his wagon. It was George's lunch break. He told Derrick he'd get there as soon as he could.
In the meantime Derrick went home to fetch his wet suit so he could have a cable ready for George. But soon Derrick found the wet suit wasn't enough. It seems, because of the cars depth and not having a lead belt, Derrick's wet suit alone was too buoyant for him to reach bottom. He tried and tried but finally realized he would need full scuba gear. So back home he goes. Everyone lived no more than 5 minutes from each other. I did say small town. <gg>
George finally finished lunch and came by. Within 1 hr they had the car and trailer pulled out. Car was a writeoff.

What an afternoon of entertainment.

take care
mikey
