I missed out on the IPO as I was a 2nd tier depositor. But now I am diligently opening CD's at all NYC mutuals with more than 3 branches as I believe there would not be much value for smaller operations.
Lately I started to think about a similar approach for mutual insurance companies. A few years ago Equitable went public and policyholders had the opportunity to buy in at the IPO. My idea would be to buy entry level annuities in companies that might convert in the future.
Have any of you considered or acted upon this approach?
Do any of you have any insights regarding which mutual insurance companies may convert? Is there a thread on SI covering this approach?
It seems as though the Independence thread has inherited by default the status of the generic thread on mutual bank companies converting.
My broker for my IRA is Schwab. I asked them if I bought a CD through them and the bank converted, would I be eligle to participate in the IPO under there custodian arrangement with the bank. Schwab said I would have to check with the bank as to what their position would be. Have any of you explored this with your broker or mutual bank?
