Babies will like them!

I am a board certified lactation consultant and routinely see mothers and dads with new babies with jaundice. I usually see them at about 4 days postpartum for feeding issues as they relate to jaundice.

Often the parents are waiting for the home health care nurse to come by and stick their baby's heel or they are waiting anxiously for yesterday's results of the heel stick. The results determine whether they continue using the lights and sometimes affects the breastfeeding situation.

I can tell you that parents are universally averse to sticking the heel of their precious bundle, and that the whole jaundice thing makes the stresses of the first week postpartum nearly unbearable.

In fact a study shows that if a baby is diagnosed with jaundice, no matter how insignificant, that the baby is much more likely to show up multiple times in the emergency room during its first year due to parent anxiety.

If parents could monitor the progress with the bili lights or know that they were not necessary, they would be very relieved.

I think there is a tremendous market for this device and it will be patient-preference driven. I can see parents choosing their pediatrician based on which method of bili monitoring they use.
