I'm an editor working in LA. While Discreet may consider themselves a competitor to Avid, and Avid may agree, the truth is, they're speaking to two vastly different markets. Discreet markets products typically priced several hundred thousand dollars above Avid's nearest entry, and the products, therefore, do different things, have different capacities, and appeal to different customers. Avid is in an unusual position, at least in LA, since their installed base here is nearly the entire market for editing systems (nonlinear). anyone wishing to displace Avid from their top spot has to contend with the thousands of trained Avid editors in this marketplace... no other manufacturer has that going for them. The downside to that is that tha marketplace is nearing saturation, thus Avid's decision to branch out into Discreet (And other's ) territories. |
