I just figured you were already using that domain for your circumspect cybering activities, so what's the difference if you continue? However, I agree that having your own ISP is the better choice. If I had a real employer, I wouldn't be too keen on using my employer's domain for much of anything, but then I'm naturally paranoid that way and have been out of the corporate loop for a very long time now.
Hotmail, Yahoo, and any number of other Internet-based free E-mail programs would serve you well. I have a Hotmail address and am very happy with it. Hotmail can be configured to gather your mail from any ISP's POP3 server, meaning you are able to retrieve your mail from any ISP which observes the SMTP protocol and from anywhere you should happen to be in the world, as long as you are able to connect to the Internet.
That said, you would have to check to make sure that the E-mail service you choose will work with your Mac. I know that Juno, another excellent free E-mail service, does not work with Macs, and Juno has no plans to accommodate Mac users.
Back to your original question as to choosing an ISP, I say just go with the telephone company.
