My mom was born in 1911. She tells me stories all the time. I am sorry I didn't appreciate these stories earlier in life. The most recent one she told me was the first time she ever saw an airplane. She was 8 years old, and some wild man landed the thing in a field next to their farm in Indiana. She described it almost as if it was a religious experience. Her big brother wanted to fly in that airplane real bad, but her mom said no. He eventually became a race car driver and was killed in a crash in 1928. I have a spiffy photo of him in his race car.

My mother has gone from seeing that magic flying machine made of wood and cloth to space shuttle flights that don't get televised because they are so boring and old.
