Thread,

As if the bloodbath in disk drives were not enough there is apparently still enough room(???) for start ups: The following picked up on the grapevine. No official announcements yet.

Finis Conner, former Chairman of Conner Peripherals, Inc., has ended his "non-compete" time restriction from Seagate buy-out and is
forming a new HDD company. The target is the very low cost (sub $100.)disk drive.

Veteran's that will join Conner, who will be Chairman, include Peter Knight (as President/CEO), and Hossein Mohagadam, who fomerly headed up Seagate's Simi Valley design center and was CTO for Seagate. Conner probably plans to leverage his strong relationship with COMPAQ and other OEMs who are clamoring for a very low cost HDD. It may be good to remember that the last time Finis started a company it became the fastest growing company in American history (Conner Peripherals, Inc).

2. Steven Kaczeus, ex-JTS chief technical officer, is forming a company to make a new 3.5 inch disk drive with a dual head/actuator design. The goal would be a disk drive with near zero latency and would be for high end servo applications.

Interesting that there is a perception by anyone that there is room at the top and the bottom of the DD market for new competition.

Best,
Stitch
