TRYING TO KILL SUB-$1K PC

In a bid to out-run its worst nightmare, Intel is getting ready to redefine the desktop PC. This next week the chip giant will lay the groundwork for Microsoft's Windows '98 introduction in June by unveiling core logic and specs for the long-awaited PC-100 memory
bus.

It hopes to make this bus, coupled with new fast synchronous DRAMs, its BX-400 core logic chip set, and the 350-megahertz Pentium-II MPU, the standard platform for Win98. This would end up obsoleting the sub-$1000 PC. To do this, Intel has had to drag a reluctant industry away from 66-meg to 100-meg busses. Not everyone will survive the transition. Timing has been a real challenge for DRAM vendors, but a nightmare for module makers, report David Lammers & Ron Wilson in EE Times. These specs will make profound changes in the PC infrastructure.
