David, here's one of your Microsoft "turds" talking about an NC..
dq, Thanh, here's an example of MSFT integrity and what these jerks look up to:

To the forum faithful:
Is is just me, or has Microsoft essentially pulled off a major marketing coup by getting the industry press to report its new "NetPC" initiative as a move into the Network Computer market?
After all, if you look at the specs you'll find that this new "NetPC" is really nothing more than a repackaged Pentium box running Windows. All of their systems management "magic" will come from future versions of Windows 95/NT, and in fact the boxes themselves must sport Plug & Play hardware that can be supported by Windows or Windows NT device drivers.
I'm surprised more people aren't picking up on this latest truckload of bull from the "Wintel" camp...

Randall,

Got a shovel full again. Nice *Intel* only spec when I saw the details. I guess the savings will be from omitting the screws on the boxes cover but putting the screws elsewhere ....

That's an interesting viewpoint, Randy, but I don't think anyone here considers it a marketing coup that the press has confused the NetPC with an NC. We've invested a lot of time and energy in addressing the manageability issues which folks have with Windows PC's. If we had wanted to endorse the NC, we could have done that months ago.
Alec.

Alec,
Have you seen the headline on the CNN web site? Clearly they're taking your announcement to mean that "Microsoft is entering the NC market."
Meanwhile your marketing team has conveniently downplayed the whole "Wintel" aspect of the NetPC. In a nutshell, you're doing your darndest to make the product look like an NC without formally committing to the NC concept. You reap the rewards (press coverage and a "foot in the NC market" should it ever take off) without actually doing anything new or innovative.
Tell me, Alec, other than price (which still remains TBD) how will the NetPC differ from a Pentium box running the next generation of Windows? I'll tell you: it won't. So if the NetPC is really just a repackaging of the "Wintel" platform, then why aren't you portraying it as such?
Bravo, Microsoft. Very clever. Very deceptive. Why am I not surprised?

Larry,
That's what puzzles me. If they are indeed just repackaging the "Wintel" spec, then why not say so?
The truth (I believe) is that Microsoft is scared to death of missing yet another important Internet trend, and that they're doing their very best to *look* like they're NC-aware just in case the whole NC phenomena actually takes off. Unfortunately, many of the less well-informed press outlets (CNN, for example) are gobbling this horsepucky up and proclaiming Microsoft's imminent arrival at the top of the NC heap....
...Pathetic.

Mu nominee for the Spin-Of-The-Year Award. Excellent! Bill, give this guy a few more shares.

Randy --
You know as well as I do that we don't control the press. Heck, we've pitched enough stuff your way, and you haven't written what we were hoping<g>, so why should CNN be any different? Fact is, NC's have a lot of mindshare right now, and despite our best efforts, the NetPC is being seen as an NC. Anybody who takes the time to read the press release is going come to the same conclusion as you.
Is the NetPC based on an Intel platform? You betcha. In fact, it was a joint Intel/Microsoft announcement, and we had Pat Gelsinger from Intel standing on stage with Paul Maritz, and the spec says you have to put a Pentium processor in the device! We don't believe that switching architectures at this juncture will help customers. They're asking for a more maintainable PC, and that's what we're proposing to deliver.

As I pointed out to you in my last message, we did say so. Over and over and over again.
Alec.
