Woman slashed in grocery express lane

MILWAUKEE, Wis., April 10 (UPI) _ A Milwaukee woman who took more than 10 items through the express checkout lane of a grocery store is recovering from surgery after an angry customer slashed off part of her nose.

Police say a 41-year-old woman who entered the line behind Vickie Lemons Wednesday evening became enraged because Lemons exceeded the 10 item limit.

Lemons' fiancee, James Powell, says the 27-year-old woman went the Kohl's Food Store to purchase soda, meat and a few other items.

He said the express lane cashier had no one in her line and waved Lemons over even though she had more than 10 items. Powell declined to say how many items his fiancee had.

Powell told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, ''It was ridiculous. The lady was saying, 'It's only 10 items,' and then she blew a fuse and started calling her (Lemons) names. There was just no logic to it, no logic at all.''

Police say the woman accosted Lemons in the parking lot immediately after Lemons left the store and whipped out a pocket knife. She allegedly sliced off half of Lemons' nose.

Lemons was in satisfactory condition after extensive surgery to repair her nose. The assailiant, whose name was not released, was detained by store employees and arrested.
