It is a statistical certainty that some small percent are failing. Multiplied by ~ 15M Zip drives and you have a large number of frustrated Zip owners. Instead of throwing it out and buying a new one after the warranty expires, or paying 1/2 the price of a new one to get it repaired, like with a VCR or TV, these people have the inclination and means to complain - the internet. So we hear from them. And now that IOM is in the doghouse, it seems like everyone enjoys kicking this pooch. But the COD problem is much smaller than certain ursines would have us believe.
