I think the real misunderstanding is on the effect of the tax cuts. Yearly tax revenues collected doubled during Reagans term. The problem was that for every dollar that came in, 2 dollars were spent, and it didn't all go to the military. The military budget was a fraction that of "entitlements". There were enourmous increases in social programs during those years, welfare, food stamps, student loans, you name it. Automatic increases were built into all of the programs during the Carter years so that the dems could save themselves the trouble of voting for additional spending every year, which they did anyway. Any attempt to trim these vast increases was called a CUT. Every budget that Reagan sent to congress was DOA. I don't want to belabor this point, but it is a cheap piece of revisionism that has been foisted on an ignorant public by the popular press for years. If you lie often enough....
By the way, am I the only one on this thread who was not born with an "entitlement". Wasn't there somebody else born with the obligation to support me?
And lest I am labeled a radical right wing extremist for speaking the truth, I don't mind reminding anyone that the country I live in was founded in rebellion against taxation and the power of the State. I was born under law with the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, which was not conditional upon paying a portion of my wages to the government. |
