Slowdown in PC sales. Not for long!
We are entering the biggest upgrade cycle ever.
USB: I had serial and parallel port on my 8080. It is time to move on to high tech. With a USB port you can plug and play just about anything; keyboard, digital speakers, scanner, etc, without shutting down and re-booting.
AGP: the new bus for video. 300 times faster than PCI !
100 mhz system bus: necessary for the faster pentiums.
Death to the ISA bus: Slows things down even if you do not use it.
New slot for faster Pentiums: needed for faster pentiums.
Multi-monitor support: Put SI on one monitor, your online broker on another, and a dvd movie on another.
Speech recognition: "when I talk my computer types" Not with a 486!
Video conferencing: Not on a 486
DVD: Not on a 486
Year 2000 problem: built into many BIOS chips.
Bigger, faster disk drives: Programs are getting bigger and slower. Your rig is only as fast as its slowest part.
Smaller footprint: I just took an old IBM PC out of service. I had to use a hand truck to haul it away.
Windows 98: We need this to access many of the above features.
Do we need all of this new stuff? Yeah if we want to stay competitive. Do you want to be typing while the competition is talkin'?
How do we get this new technology? We can replace each individual component, but if you add everything up, you will find it is cheaper and easier just to order a new box from DELL.
Besides, have you ever bought a new disk drive only to find out it was not compatible with your controller? Have you ever upgraded your BIOS only to find your computer will not even boot now? Don't even try to replace a floppy drive on a COMPAC computer unless you order the drive from them. How long does it take you to replace a motherboard? What's that smell?
Just call DELL. They will have a new computer to you in about a week. I ordered a laptop on Monday and had it on my lap on Thursday.
The only thing holding us up is Window 98. Is the US Government trying to help Asia out of their the economic woes by giving them the PC market or what? Come on DOJ, Get off of Microsoft's back before we loose our lead. Fussing over a browser..really! Why not fuss over the Calculator, the paint program, or hyperterm that comes with Windows? Think of all the calculator program companies Microsoft has put of business. <G> Find something better to do with your time and the tax payers money!
There! My third post for today. See you tomorrow!
