I can't tell from the sketchy description, but I presume that 80 does not represent gigabits per second. It signifies channels and Lucent has made such an announcement. Ciena has tested a 100 channel product. Over short distances it is possible to transmit many terabits per second; the trick is getting your mouth around the hose.
