Believe it was Cringely that said you could count on the Mac's demise just from checking out the declining number of ad pages in the Mac press, as well as the "death" of MacUser. Well, sure enough my new MacAddict showed up and I thought, God this one feels thin. It's 96 pages compared to 112 two months ago. I thought, well, perhaps this is just a slow time seasonally or ad sales were down for the month. Nope--ad sales are up from 38 or so in the March ish to just over 40 in May's. It also seems that ads from resellers are way up from last year. Guess people are loving the Mac business these days. Those that managed to stay in the business are getting a bigger piece of the pie, it seems to me.

And the prices from some of these vendors are amazingly below MAP. As low as $1549 for the 233 mhz G3 desktop and I've just seen a banner ad for applemacnet with the same one for $1499. This has to help sales, especially since Apple gets the same bucks whatever the selling price.

There was a rumor that periperal sales were good this quarter, which makes me wonder about Mac the Knife's rumors about Apple selling the LaserWriter biz to Lexmark. Ian's comments about selling complete systems might be an anecdotal sign that peripherals are perking up. FWIW, I really would love for Apple to be a leader in the flat screen biz.
