Holly, Smokers die earlier on average, thus saving the state on social security benefits and health care costs normally associated with caring for elderly people.

In countries like Canada and the UK where cigaretes are heavily taxed, smokers actually pay in to the system far more than they ever take out in healthcare costs etc.
