<<Meanwhile, the cross-industry bickering over interlaced versus progressive-scanning was much in evidence at the conference, despite efforts by both broadcasters and equipment vendors to present a united front. Many attendees said that multiple video formats for the production, transmission and display of digital TV are here to stay. "Diversity is a good thing," said Andy Setos, executive vice president of the News Technology Group at Fox. "In the digital world, we are finally freed to pursue our competitive decisions."
"We ought to put this argument [over video formats] behind us," said Preston Davis, president of ABC Broadcast Operations & Engineering. "It's about time to stop bickering about which format is better."
The four major networks announced diverging choices for their DTV production and transmission standards. NBC will offer HDTV in the 1,080-line interlaced format, and so will CBS and PBS. ABC has chosen the 720-line progressive (720p) format for HDTV programming. For standard-definition programming, the bulk of DTV programming will be transmitted in 480i by both CBS and PBS. Other networks are believed to be planning a mix of different formats for standard-definition TV. Fox is the only company planning all-progressive broadcasts, and is expected to broadcast entirely in 480p.>>
On to 11 and beyond!
