In fact, the battle to watch won't be SONET versus ATM - it will be ATM versus IP. Huh? It's more like IP over Sonet/SDH versus IP over ATM over Sonet/SDH. That's the real battle going on now. But it's not really a battle per se. Both choices have their niche. Sometimes it makes sense to use one, sometimes the other.
