Actually, in the olden days of the Internet and BBSs (before Windoze and the World Wide Web), when bandwidth was at a premium, electronic messages were necessarily terse and could almost be likened to teletype or Telegram messages. Hence, emoticons were used to clarify a message's intent. Additionally, touch-typing was not the norm in the electronic world of yesteryear, and there was an abundance of two-finger typists at large--another reason for the brevity you mention.

On a technical note, a piece of trivia from the olden days: "eom" is a variation of "eof," meaning "end of file."
