I once wrote that the fastest land mammal is not the cheetah, it is the Market Maker raising the ask at the open when there are a lot of "buy at market" orders open. If you see large spreads in the first five minutes that is what is happening.

Then, you need to look at the size of the buy orders, if the size is large then "monster buyer" has returned and you should jump in as the price will probably rise through the day. If the size is small, then the chances are those orders will be cleared in about an hour and the ask may drop around 10:30 EDT.

Tim Flick could comment on this observation better than I.

I will be buying, bought some more last week as it looked like a lull.
