Do you know where GI bought it's MPEG-2 Magnitude Line? And Compression Labs used C-Cube chips, as of 6/96(just a bit dated) They didn't keep the personel, so they didn't continue R&D..............

Complete Product Line of Standards-based Digital Compression and Transmission Systems

Third, General Instrument acquired the Magnituder product family of MPEG-2, DSS and DVB digital compression systems from Compression Labs, Inc. This acquisition expands GI's worldwide digital compression leadership and positions GI as the only manufacturer offering a complete product line of standards-based digital compression and transmission systems, including ATSC, MPEG-2, DSS and DVB compliant solutions. Building on its installed base of 179 DigiCipher I satellite systems with the cumulative capacity to transmit 512 channels of digital programming, GI recorded increased orders and shipments of its new MPEG-2 digital satellite systems in the second quarter of 1996. Through June 30, 1996, GI has installed and received customer commitments to ship 459 MPEG-2 and DSS satellite systems with the cumulative capacity to transmit 1,749 digital channels for programmers and service providers worldwide. SURFboard Cable Modem Network Fourth, GI and its partners formed the Videoware Innovation Partners (VIP) program to enable network operators to immediately deploy a flexible, turn-key cable modem system that integrates hardware, network management, Internet and intranet access and multimedia services over GI's SURFboard cable modem network. GI's VIP partners include FORE Systems, Macromedia, Silicon Graphics, Sun Microsystems, U.S. Robotics and more than 30 other technology and content companies.

Encoder Hardware
One of the important attributes of MPEG2 video coding systems is that most of the compression effort is done by a single expensive encoder at the signal's transmitting location. This in turn allows the set-top decoder to be a relatively simple and inexpensive device.

DirecTV's Castle Rock, CO and USSB's Oak Dale MN broadcast centers are equipped with more than 200 Compression Labs, Inc. (CLI) (San Jose, CA) Magnitude MPEG2 encoders. These encoders use an array of encoder chips from Milpitas, CA semiconductor manufacturer C-Cube Microsystems. An important part of the encoders is the inclusion of a dynamic statistical multiplexer, allowing the operating companies to best tailor the image quality to the demands of the program material, helping to optimize both bandwidth utilization and video quality.

In 1996, CLI's broadcast division (including DBS coders and multiplexers) was sold to General Instrument who added the former CLI products to its product line. They did not, however, retain the CLI R&D staff.

In the spring of 1997, the balance of CLI was merged into videoconferencing company VTEL which has no broadcasting interests.
