Conscious, sentient, acting agents (a fancy way of saying "animals and stuff") override mere simple physical "determinacy" by means of exercising their will (which transcends the merely material plane. Materialism never has been able to explain non-material categories, and yet it uses them: logic and language being but two examples.)
