Last year we were in Yawasewa, one of the small islands off Fiji. There is a beach there, where hundreds of hermit crabs were gathered doing their thing. The hermit crab is a fascinating creature, the only one besides us humans I can think of that has a piece of private property-its shell- that it acquires externally and continually looks to upgrade. We've had some as pets for the last several years and this was our first opportunity to check them out in the wild.
After we'd been there for a while, along came a local woman, holding a large bucket. When she got to where the crabs were, she started picking them up and tossing them in the bucket. Yes, they were to be her family's dinner tonight. Rather disconcerting, to see your pets' distant relatives as just another part of the food chain, just as dog owners feel about certain Asian diets. But she was no more evil than the kid at the supermarket fish counter who daily executes lobsters by the dozen...
