LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 31, 1996--
Christian Slater set to star in romantic mystery
The Kushner-Locke Co. (NASDAQ/NNM:KLOC) has acquired worldwide distribution rights to "Basil," a $10 million budgeted theatrical feature based on Wilke Collins' gothic suspense novel, in which Christian Slater has been set to star, it was announced Thursday by Kushner-Locke co-chairmen Peter Locke and Donald Kushner. Kushner-Locke began licensing the film at the MIFED Film Market, Oct. 27-Nov. 1. "Basil," a Victorian era romantic mystery, is being adapted for the screen and directed by Radha Bharadwaj ("Closet Land"), and is set to begin principal photography on European locations in February, with Slater and Bharadwaj producing. Slater, who co-starred with John Travolta in the action hit "Broken Arrow," plays an aristocratic young man in Victorian England who falls in love with and then secretly marries a mysterious, sensuous woman from a working class family. Following the breakup of his marriage, disowned by his authoritarian father and cast into the streets of London, he finds himself in great danger and in the center of a chilling plot of revenge against his estranged family. Slater also co-starred with Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt in "Interview with the Vampire," with Kevin Costner in "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves," with Patricia Arquette in "True Romance," with Winona Ryder in "Heathers," and with Kevin Bacon in "Murder in the First." Bharadwaj wrote and directed her critically acclaimed debut film, "Closet Land," starring Alan Rickman and Madeleine Stowe, for Imagine Entertainment. "Closet Land" screened in The Toronto Film Festival, San Sebastian International Festival, where it won the Human Rights and Youth Jury Awards, the Stockholm Film Festival and other festivals worldwide. "We believe `Basil' is an excellent complement to our theatrical feature lineup," stated Peter Locke, "and very much in keeping with Kushner-Locke's plan to increase its handling of quality films with important casts." The company also recently acquired the worldwide distribution rights to "The Last Time I Committed Suicide" with Keanu Reeves. The Kushner-Locke Co. is a leading independent entertainment company primarily engaged in the development, production and distribution of television programming and the development and production of feature films for theatrical release to home video and cable.
